Announcement of the 2010 impact factor

The 2010 Thomson Reuters Journal Impact Factors have recently been released. The impact factor is often taken as a marker of journal prestige and status and many authors use it when deciding on which journal to submit their work. One of my main aims since taking over as the Honorary Editor some 2 years ago was to try and raise our impact factor (IF) and profile so as to attract authors who might otherwise send their work elsewhere. This strategy should also help to raise the IF still further.

Historically BJOMS has lagged behind our competitors and for the first time our impact factor (IF) went above the critical 1.0 value last year (1.327). So it is with great delight that I am able to report that our latest IF (relating to citations received in 2010) has climbed to 1.890. This makes BJOMS one of the leading journals in our specialty when ranked by IF and has lifted it up to 58th out of 187 journals indexed by Thomson Reuters in Surgery.
